Rana Plaza Disaster: Our Deepest Condolences

From Time

In light of the recent tragedy in Bangladesh, we offer our sincerest condolences to those affected by the Rana Plaza disaster. Rana Plaza Disaster: Our Deepest Condolences

This tragedy is still unfolding, but at least 142 people have died in the rubble, and over 1,000 workers (of 2500) were injured. Many are still trapped. Family members, law enforcement, and soldiers are literally clawing through the rubble to find their loved ones.

A few things we do know:

  • The Rana Plaza building had many code violations.
  • At least four floors were constructed illegally without permits.
  • Companies with ties to Rana include Walmart, Benetton, JC Penney, H&M, Gap.Tcom
  • Some of these companies are denying ties to the disaster, despite labels and tags found in the rubble

As we continue to get more information on the devastation, we need to pause and consider what we can do to prevent this from happening again.

We cannot let these victims die in vain. They are not numbers. They were cheap labor, but cannot become cheap lives.

This tragedy must become a talking point that brings about change in the fashion industry.

Let it help open communication about the true state of the fashion industry and keep the conversation going. From designers to manufacturers to retailers and consumers, we must all be aware of how and at what cost our clothing is made. If it doesn’t, this type of tragedy will happen again and again.

We also want to take a moment to thank you, our customers for being aware, taking the time to research, and possibly even paying a little more for your clothing to help prevent this type of tragedy.
